Infectious diseases occur when the immune system fails to kill pathogenic microorganisms that grow within the body and cause disease. The intravenous infusions of antibiotic, antiviral or antifungal agents are used when oral medications are unable to produce expected results or when treatment dictates IV therapy from the onset of care. Home administration of anti-infective therapy is beneficial for patients who require short or long-term antiinfective therapy.

Delivery:
Most anti-infective therapies are administered at specific intervals, typically two or three times a day, depending upon the specific drug. Access is dependant on the drug and concentration required. The medications can be given either via a PICC or central line.
